When Choices Run Out: The Road to Packer

In 1874, six men entered the Colorado mountains in search of opportunity.

Only one came out.

Alferd Packer's name would become permanently tied to one of the American West's most disturbing and enduring mysteries. Five men were dead. Packer survived. And over the years, he told more than one story about what happened in those mountains.

But this episode isn't just about cannibalism, murder, or the question of what truly happened on a snow-covered trail more than 150 years ago.

It's about the choices that came before.

A group of men looking for gold and opportunity. A difficult journey. Warnings that winter was coming. The decision to keep going. And the strange human urgency that can make turning back feel harder than moving forward.

What happened in those mountains may never be fully known.

But perhaps the road that led there can still teach us something.

This is the story of Alferd Packer.
